Kevin Sumba’s mother died of AIDS, leaving him alone to fend for himself from the age of 10. Determined to stay in school, he supported himself by roasting peanuts. Kenya, Kevin’s country and community, like others in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been hard hit by the AIDS epidemic. Now in Kisumu where Kevin lives, not only are many young people orphans like Kevin but 40% of the women between 18-34 are HIV positive.
Kevin is turning 17. He needs to know how to protect himself if he wants a future, but his village elder tells him, No matter what, do not use a condom, but pray to the Lord. Kevin is a devout Catholic. Kevin’s journey takes him from his home in a slum near Lake Victoria all the way to the Vice President of his country.
Around the world, other teenagers put his questions to their leaders. It’s Kevin’s race to overcome the odds against him and take control of his own future. He discovers how to help those like him, orphaned and voiceless. Surprisingly entertaining and highly moving, this is a film about a teenager as he transforms from a victimized boy into a young leader.
